You have a 92 in SCH4U, an 89 in MHF4U, and a 78 in ENG4U. Your average sits at 87 and you cannot quite work out why, because every mark on your transcript except one is strong. That single English mark is doing more damage than it looks like it is doing, and it is almost certainly sitting inside your admission average whether you want it there or not.

Almost every Ontario university program lists ENG4U (English, Grade 12, University Preparation) as a required prerequisite. Engineering wants it. Nursing wants it. Commerce wants it. Life sciences wants it. That means ENG4U is not an elective you can quietly trade out for a course you score better in. It is a locked slot in your Top 6, and the mark you earn in it counts exactly as much as the mark you earn in calculus.

Why ENG4U Ends Up in Nearly Every Top 6

Your Ontario admission average is built from your best six Grade 12 U or M courses, but the program you apply to fills some of those slots for you. This is not a talent problem. A student holding a 92 in SCH4U is clearly capable of clear, precise thinking on paper. Chemistry and English are simply marked on different things, and nobody ever sat you down and explained what ENG4U is measuring.

Where ENG4U Marks Actually Get Lost

In practice, most of the gap between a 78 and an 86 comes from three places.

• Thesis precision. Lost marks in Ontario English essays are rarely spelling or grammar. They are a thesis that describes a text instead of arguing about it. "Shakespeare uses light and dark imagery in Macbeth" is an observation. "Macbeth's light and dark imagery tracks his loss of moral agency rather than his ambition" is an argument, and only the second one can reach Level 4 Thinking, no matter how neat the paragraphs underneath it are.

• The independent study unit. The ISU carries a large share of the course and it is the assignment students underestimate most, because it arrives with weeks of runway and no weekly checkpoint. Marks drain out of it through late topic changes and evidence gathered after the argument was already written.

• The timed final essay. The ENG4U final evaluation almost always includes writing under a clock, often on a text you cannot take home. Students who have only ever written essays with unlimited time and a laptop discover in June that they have never practised planning an essay in eight minutes.

• Read the rubric before you write, not after the mark comes back. Ontario English work is scored on Knowledge, Thinking, Communication and Application. Find out which category you are actually losing.

Semester placement changes the timeline. If ENG4U is in your first semester, your first major essay is likely three or four weeks away and your final evaluation lands in January, right as Ontario universities begin receiving marks. If it is in second semester, you have more runway, but your ENG4U final will not exist until July, so the mark carrying your application is your April midterm. Either way, the fix belongs at the start of the course rather than the week of the final.

• First semester: aim to have your essay method sorted by the time the first major assignment comes back in early October.

• Second semester: your April upload matters more than your July final, so front-load the work.

• Either semester: if you are carrying MHF4U or SBI4U at the same time, decide now which one gets your weekend hours, because English essays and problem sets compete for the same evenings.
