Polynomial functions. Graph and analyze polynomials, factor to find zeros, solve polynomial equations and inequalities. Marks get lost sketching without a calculator and connecting factored form to graph behaviour.

Rational functions. Graph rational functions, identify asymptotes and discontinuities, solve rational equations. Marks get lost distinguishing vertical asymptotes from holes, and on end behaviour.

Exponential & logarithmic functions. Master log laws, solve exponential and log equations, model real growth and decay. Marks get lost applying log laws backwards and on equations requiring a change of base.

Trigonometric functions. Work in radians, graph transformed trig functions, prove identities, solve trig equations. Marks get lost on identities (the single most-feared topic) and solving equations over a domain.

Characteristics of functions & rates of change. Average vs. instantaneous rates of change, combining functions, composite functions. Marks get lost interpreting rate-of-change answers in context and on f(g(x)) mechanics.


Why MHF4U feels so hard (and the 3 units that do the damage)


Three units account for most of the tears: logarithms, trig identities, and rational functions. They share a common thread: each one demands that you understand why a rule works, because the exam questions never look like the homework questions.


The deeper reason MHF4U hurts is pace. Ontario teachers have five strands to cover and no slack in the calendar. If the log laws didn't land in the two days your class spent on them, the course moves on without you, and then trig identities assume algebra fluency you didn't get to consolidate. Prerequisites and what comes next


The path runs MCR3U (Grade 11 Functions) → MHF4U → MCV4U (Calculus & Vectors). MHF4U is the prerequisite or co-requisite for MCV4U, and most students take them in sequence or together in Grade 12.
