MCR3U (Functions, University Preparation) runs four strands across six typical teaching units:


Characteristics of functions. Function notation, domain and range, inverses, transformations of parent functions. Marks get lost on transformations (order of operations on the graph) and inverse notation.

Quadratics revisited. Max/min problems, completing the square, solving with the quadratic formula, radicals. Marks get lost on word problems and simplifying radical expressions.

Discrete functions. Sequences, series, recursion, Pascal's triangle. Marks get lost telling arithmetic from geometric, and on recursive notation.

Financial applications. Compound interest, annuities. Marks get lost choosing the right formula, and on calculator entry errors under time pressure.


Why MCR3U feels so hard (and the 3 usual suspects)


Transformations top the list every year. The idea of stretching, flipping and sliding a graph sounds visual and friendly, until y = -2f(3(x + 1)) - 4 asks you to apply five operations in the right order. Students who memorize 'the rules' without the logic get scrambled by every new question format.


Second is trigonometry, which arrives in two waves: triangle trig (sine law's ambiguous case is a mark-killer) and then trig functions as graphs, where suddenly the transformations unit comes back to collect its debts.
