What MPM2D covers, unit by unit
MPM2D (Principles of Mathematics, Grade 10 Academic) is built on three strands of the Ontario curriculum: quadratic relations, analytic geometry, and trigonometry. Here's the map, with the mark-losing spots called out:
Quadratic relations. Graph parabolas, identify the vertex, axis of symmetry and zeros, and connect y = ax² + bx + c to its transformations in vertex form y = a(x – h)² + k. Marks get lost sketching by hand and moving between the three forms of a quadratic.
Factoring & solving quadratic equations. Expand and simplify, factor common factors, trinomials and differences of squares, complete the square, and solve with the quadratic formula. Marks get lost when factoring isn't fluent, and this is the single skill MCR3U assumes most.
Linear systems. Solve systems of two equations by substitution and elimination, and model realistic problems. Marks get lost translating word problems into equations: the setup, not the algebra.
Analytic geometry. Length and midpoint of line segments, the equation of a circle x² + y² = r², and multi-step verification of properties of triangles and quadrilaterals. Marks get lost on the multi-step proofs that combine slope, length and midpoint in one question.
Trigonometry. Similar triangles, the primary trig ratios (sine, cosine, tangent) with the Pythagorean theorem, then the sine law and cosine law in acute triangles. Marks get lost choosing the right tool for the triangle in front of you, and on word problems that need a diagram first.
Why MPM2D feels harder than Grade 9 (and the 3 usual suspects)
First: factoring. It's the skill MPM2D drills hardest, and the one everything downstream assumes. In Grade 10 you can pass while factoring slowly; in Grade 11 Functions, slow factoring means running out of test time. The difference between 'can do it' and 'does it automatically' is the real outcome of this course, and it's built with structured, feedback-corrected reps, not just more homework.
Second: completing the square. It's most students' first taste of genuinely abstract algebra: manipulating an expression not to get an answer, but to change its form.
