Applications of derivatives. Optimization, related motion, curve sketching with first and second derivatives. Marks get lost setting up optimization word problems: the translation step, not the calculus.
Geometric vectors. Vector operations, dot and cross products, applications to force and velocity. Marks get lost on dot vs. cross product (when and why) and on geometric proofs.
Lines & planes in three-space. Vector, parametric and scalar equations, intersections of lines and planes, distances. Marks get lost visualizing 3D intersections and choosing the right equation form.
Why MCV4U feels so hard (and the 3 places it bites)
First: optimization word problems. The calculus is rarely the issue: it's translating 'a farmer has 600 m of fencing' into a function you can differentiate. That's a modelling skill nobody explicitly taught you, and it's where the most exam marks die.
Second: the chain rule in combination. On its own it's fine. Buried inside a product rule with a trig function, it becomes an error factory. Fluency here is pure reps: structured, feedback-corrected reps, not just more homework.
Third: the vectors half, especially lines and planes in R³. You're suddenly expected to reason about objects you can't fully draw. Students who memorize the six equation forms without the geometric picture hit a wall on intersection problems. MHF4U (Advanced Functions) is the prerequisite or co-requisite: the trig, logs and function analysis from Advanced Functions appear inside MCV4U constantly. Taking both at once? That's common and workable, but it compresses your margin for gaps; a tutor keeping both courses aligned pays for itself quickly. Further back, a solid MCR3U (Grade 11 Functions) foundation is what both Grade 12 courses quietly assume.
