SPH3U (Grade 11 University Physics) is a required prerequisite for most university STEM programs in Ontario: engineering, computer science, health sciences, physical sciences, and more. If your mark suffers, it doesn't just hurt your average. It can close doors before you even get a chance to knock on them.
MCR3U (Grade 11 Functions) is the gateway to all senior math in Ontario. You need it for MHF4U (Advanced Functions), which is in turn required for MCV4U (Calculus and Vectors), the prerequisite for virtually every competitive university program involving math. Universities look at Grade 11 marks earlier than most students expect. Some schools use them for early admission decisions. Others use them as a benchmark when Grade 12 marks aren't yet available. Either way, a strong Grade 11 is not just a stepping stone: it's part of the application story.
The Most Common Reasons Students Struggle in SPH3U and MCR3U
Here's something that might be reassuring: most students who struggle in these courses aren't struggling because they're not smart enough. They're struggling because of specific, fixable gaps.
In SPH3U, the most common culprits are:
• Weak algebra foundations. Physics is math-heavy in a way Grade 10 Science never was. You're not just plugging numbers into formulas: you're rearranging them, solving for different variables, and interpreting what the answer means physically. Students who aren't comfortable with algebraic manipulation hit a wall fast.
• Treating physics like a memory course. This is the trap. You can memorize every formula in the course and still fail a test because the problems require you to know when and why to use them. Physics rewards conceptual understanding, not recall.
• The "I get it in class but not on tests" problem. This is almost always a sign that a student is following along passively rather than actually processing. Physics requires active problem-solving practice, not just watching examples.
The five main units of SPH3U (Kinematics, Forces, Energy and Society, Waves and Sound, and Electricity and Magnetism) build on each other. If you don't fully understand kinematics, forces become confusing. If forces are shaky, energy is harder. The course is cumulative in a way that punishes gaps.
In MCR3U, the struggles look slightly different:
• The abstraction jump. Grade 10 math felt concrete: quadratics, linear systems, right-triangle trig. MCR3U introduces functions as abstract mathematical objects, logarithms, the unit circle, and trigonometric identities. Students who relied on visual, procedural math in Grade 10 often find this shift jarring.
• Logarithms without understanding. Many students learn log rules as a set of procedures and never understand what a logarithm actually is. When application questions show up, the procedures don't help. (A logarithm answers the question: "what power do I need to raise this base to in order to get this number?" Once that clicks, the rest follows.)
• Trigonometry at the unit circle level. Grade 10 trig was right triangles: SOH-CAH-TOA, clean and visual. MCR3U trig lives on the unit circle, involves any angle, and requires you to work with identities and periodic functions. Students who didn't fully nail Grade 10 trig find this unit particularly rough.
• The pace. MCR3U covers six substantial units in one course year. Each unit moves quickly. There is not a lot of time built in for students to catch up if they fall behind.
What to Review Before September: A Subject-by-Subject Checklist
The good news? You don't need to learn everything from scratch. You need to shore up the right foundations.
For SPH3U, prioritize these before September:
• Algebra fluency: Can you rearrange an equation to isolate any variable? Can you work with scientific notation? These skills come up constantly.
• Grade 10 Science (SNC2D) concepts: Specifically, the motion and electricity units. SPH3U picks up where those left off.
• Unit analysis: Understanding how units work (m/s, m/s², N, J) and being able to use them to check your answers is a skill that separates strong physics students from everyone else.
• Reading graphs: Kinematics is heavily graph-based. Practice interpreting position-time and velocity-time graphs before September.
For MCR3U, prioritize these:
• Quadratic functions from MPM2D: Factoring, completing the square, the quadratic formula, and graphing parabolas. MCR3U extends all of this.
• Right-triangle trigonometry: SOH-CAH-TOA, special triangles (30-60-90 and 45-45-90), and the sine and cosine laws. These are the foundation of the trig unit.
• Exponent rules: MCR3U's exponential functions unit starts with a review, but students who aren't fluent with negative and fractional exponents lose time and marks.
• Function notation basics: f(x), domain, range, and the idea of a function as a rule. Getting comfortable with this language before school starts makes Unit 1 much smoother.

What to Expect in Grade 11 Physics: Key Concepts Explained

Kinematics is about describing motion mathematically. You'll work with displacement, velocity, and acceleration, and spend a lot of time interpreting and drawing graphs. This unit is foundational and sets the tone for the whole course.

Electricity and Magnetism is where many students hit their biggest wall. Circuits, voltage, current, resistance, and magnetic fields involve abstract concepts that are hard to visualize. This unit rewards students who take the time to build genuine understanding rather than rushing through formulas.
